Dr Peter Nixon is Professor of Biochemistry at Imperial College London and has been a principle collaborator in Algae Printing and related projects. The Nixon group is studying various aspects of solar energy conversion by chloroplasts and cyanobacteria. Projects include:
- The structure and function of the Photosystem II complex involved in water-splitting
- The assembly and repair of PSII and the biogenesis of the thylakoid membrane
- Cyanobacterial synthetic biology
- Over-expression of high-value products in higher plant chloroplasts
Light energy harvested by chlorophyll and other pigments drove the energetically unfavourable synthesis of carbohydrate molecules (CH2O)n from the simpler carbon dioxide (CO²) and water (H2O) molecules with the concomitant liberation of oxygen (O²) into the atmosphere (Wobbe et al. 2016) – Peter Nixon
